    Agentic engineering is the discipline of using AI agents as part of a professional software delivery system. It is not the same thing as asking a chatbot for a snippet or letting a model generate a whole app without review. The key shift is that the agent can plan, inspect files, use tools, make changes, run checks, and iterate toward a goal while a human engineer supervises the work.

    That distinction matters because the industry is moving beyond the casual language of vibe coding. Vibe coding captured the early excitement of describing what you want and watching AI produce code. Agentic engineering is more mature. It assumes that AI can accelerate delivery, but only when the surrounding process protects code quality, security, and maintainability.

    In practice, agentic engineering requires an engineer to define the objective, set boundaries, provide context, approve risky actions, and validate the output. The agent may draft tests, refactor modules, summarize a codebase, or implement a feature. The human remains accountable for the system. That makes agentic engineering closer to delegation than automation.
